AN "OVERHAUL OVERVIEW"

The inspection process establishes the baseline for comparative costs relative to the remanufacturing baseline for additive costs based on the condition of the components. If the components have not been abused and can be remanufactured using the expected expendable items, consumables and subassemblies, the baseline costs for the overhaul remain constant. If however, the components have been abused or have unrepairable conditions, the baseline costs for the overhaul will increase.

• Corrective/Replacement Actions Stage: This phase of the overhaul process is on-going at many levels to include the fuselage and aggregates at other facilities and components removed from the aircraft that stay within the primary overhaul facility. The condition of the aircraft determines whether the overhaul action is rehabilitating the original item or area or if a replacement item is required. Areas subject to corrosion are managed separately and under specific criteria for inspection, treatment and corrective action. The end result of this phase is a cataloging of the sum total of actions necessary to return the aircraft to active status at every respective level of activity.

• Reassembly Stage: As with all previous stages of activity, reassembly takes place at numerous locations and levels of functionality. Whether at aggregate overhaul facilities or individual workshops, the reassembly process returns the subassemblies, components and aggregates to the aircraft for integration in the rebuild phase. Well established sequencing of actions and  timelines to complete the rebuild activities minimizes redundancies and repetitive actions as different areas of the aircraft are returned to functionality. A subset of reassembly is the weight and balance process to ensure the aircraft is within design limitations and parameters.   
• Validation and Test Stage: These activities span the entire aircraft and all supporting systems and subsystems. Key validation and test activities are centered on all electrical connections, wiring harnesses, interface junctions and associated areas where accurate readings of input devices are critical to safety of flight functions. At the aggregate overhaul facilities each respective major component is tested for performance data that meets original design criteria. This could include bench checks, full operational run-ups and or comparative testing to functionally validate performance. As the aircraft is returned to operational status the validation and test functions continue until a fully operational aircraft is capable of performing full power-on static and subsequent dynamic testing. The final activity is test flight and airworthiness release by the authorized overhaul facility.
